I tried the LiveWire tool to gain some time in segmentation.  Although it really appeared to be an advantage af first, the software crashes every time I finished up to about 1/4th of the project.   Does my PC need more memory for this application when compared to the former version?  Are there others experiencing the same problem?  What might be the cause?

3D live wire

I have also been using 3D LiveWire with the Mimics 13 release - and have also been experiencing system crashes after I press the segment button.  It looks like it gets through about 75% of the process and then freezes.
I have found that it helps to segment small portions at a time (fewer slices and simpler shapes); and then I boolean the masks into one.  Definitely not ideal, but helps with the problem.
Also - it would be great to be able to save the contours/edges detected with the livewire function.  That way if I would like to add more edges after hitting segment to get a closer approximation, or not have to redo all the edges when the program crashes.
I would appreciate any other tips!

Dear Allison,

The upcoming release of Mimics 13.1 (expected end November) will deal with all of these issues;
We fixed some bugs to make it more stable. It now also saves the contours, so you can still modify them after an initial segmentation. We also added the possibility to move the points you set with the LiveWire.
I hope it will aid you in creating fast and accurate segmentations!

Evaluation Live Wire
In recent weeks, I was able to probe the "Live Wire Tool " of mimics of 13 extensively. This tool is certainly a source of enrichment for specific cases in which an automatic segmentation is not possible. Especially in the field of MRI segmentation shows significant benefits, because the gray scale is very small, and thus the automatic detection of edges is very difficult. This segmentation of muscle is much faster. But also in the segmentation of CBCT are some benefits available. The manual drawing of boundary contours in each layer is now much faster possible. Apparently, the edge determination is based in the "live wire" mode on a spline drawn on gray value jumps. A nice idea-but it is still handwork.
Unfortunately, the live wire tool is not yet stable. Frequent periodically crashes just in cases with miltiple edge contours detection were observed of the tool. Mimics must then be restarted. My configuration is: Intel i7 3.33Ghz, 12GB RAM, Windows Vista 64. In simple geometric bodies without multiple marking the tool works. Difficulties are in cases for complex geometric body with multiple overlapping of x / y or z axis. Certainly, the next version is more stable.

Are there other experiences?

Live Wire

I have had the same experience with "live wire", very unstable, multiple edge detections, etc.   Today, alone, I have had several crashes while using "live wire".  I have tried to reproduce the crash conditions, but the crashes seem to be random; has anyone been able to report a specific condition that causes a crash?  I will admit that I was able to obtain a segmentation with out a crash while using "live wire" on the phone with Materialise support, trying to force it to reproduce a crash.
Also, do the "live wire" controls do anything for you?  I have tried experiments with the attraction and magnitude set at  the extremes and noted no difference in the edge detection or the contour of the wire.
The system configuration is: Pentium D 3.6Ghz, 4GB ram, XP Professional (32 bit), Geforce 8400 series video card.

3D LiveWire

Hi,
I notice you are working on cartilage morphology. Indeed this new LiveWire tool can be really helpful in segmenting cartilage from MR images.
Before releasing, this feature has been tested extensively in-house and by beta-testers. So far we have not encountered this behaviour. I don't think this is a memory issue. Maybe there's something wrong with your project file. You will be contacted soon by one of our technical engineers. We need to try to reproduce this behaviour and find the workflow so it can be fixed.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

LiveWire

Hi Eric,
hi SK26,
I installed the mimics in Windows XP 64 and in Vista 64 bit mode. with two different high end PC`s (different main Processors, graphic cards...). The same result. If I finished the 3rd or 4th lifewire section in the same anatomical part the screen sleeps and there is no wake up. After same minutes the screen returns under the mouse pointer, if you move these. For better understanding how software-failure interact, you should think about the possibility the trace the software hardware interaction with a special file which protocoll all interaction. A other possibility is that you can contact me in a remote modus. So you can see in live the crashes of live wire modul.

Live Wire crashes

I have had the same experience, live wire crashes almost every time I try to use it for a segmentation.  This has occured on several different platforms:  XP Professional 32 and 64 bit, 4 - 12GB of RAM.  I reported the crashes using MIMICS 13.0 Beta, and have found little difference with MIMICS 13.0 release;  also, I did report the crashes during the beta test period.

It would be interesting to know if the aforementioned problems with the 3D LiveWire in Mimics 13.0 are solved in the Mimics 13.1 release?
